Mind Your Manners

Good morning! It's been pouring like crazy since last night. I hope it will be nicer next week, when I'm home on vacation.

Please accept my apologies for not posting yesterday's solution grid. I didn't realize it until late last night. Today's solution grid is to the right.

Today's puzzle by Sally R. Stein is called "No Problem" and it's a tribute to good manners. The clue to all three theme answers is "Response to 'Thanks.'"

20A: MY PLEASURE

38A (with 40A): YOU"RE SO WELCOME

56A: GLAD TO DO IT

Emily Post would be turning over in her grave if she saw the display of poor manners these days. When I was growing up, proper etiquette was strictly enforced in my house. An infraction was a cause for punishment (usually in the room for a week with no TV or friends). At worst, we were given a swat on the butt. Kids these days not only badmouth their peers, they badmouth their parents, too. If a parents hits his/her child, that's enough to warrant a call from Child Protective Services (CPS). Kids are also too busy looking at their Smart Phones and texting to carry on any real conversations. In my opinion, fault lies with the parent because kids often imitate their parents' behavior. Parents need to enforce proper behavior in their children and tell them it wouldn't hurt to say "please" and "thank you" every once in a while. Maybe they should conduct lessons on basic etiquette in our classrooms.

Wow, no "Alphabet Soup" today.

The cryptoquote for today is by former Dodgers manager Tommy Lasorda (b. 1927):

Tommy Lasorda
When we lose, I eat. When we win, I also eat. I also eat when we're rained out.

Tommy Lasorda was never a great player. He never quite reached the majors. However, in 1961, he became a scout for the Dodgers and then a minor league manager. From there, he went on to become a coach, then eventually hit the big time as manager. Lasorda had a successful career with the Dodgers and was a media favorite because of his colorful personality.

Finally, we have the JUMBLE. The picture is the owner of a seafood shop threatening to cut his employee's bonus. His other employees are whispering that they never got more than their wages. The caption reads: "The greedy owner of the seafood market was _______."

Word list:

HOWSN = SHOWN
TULAF = FAULT
TECIXE = EXCITE
SPLUCT = SCULPT

Scrambled solution: SHFLIESH
Solution: "SHEL-FISH"

Sort of ties into the theme of today's crossword (as in what not to do).

The solution to April's Muller Monthly Music Meta is out. I wasn't even close. Now on to solving the New York magazine puzzle. it turned out to be a good weather day after all, with the temperature hitting 64 degrees.

Till tomorrow. . . .

Signing off,
The Puzzlechick
