Play Ball!

Good morning! I apologize for not posting the Stumper solution this weekend. Between my trip to Yale on Saturday and sleeping most of the day yesterday, I didn't have a chance to solve the puzzles.

"These Paper Bullets" was a fun show and rumor has it may come to Brooklyn. We didn't have a chance to see much of the campus. By the time we got out of the show, it was almost 5:00. We then had to eat dinner and catch a train back to NY (we didnt' want to get home too late). The only snag was our trip to New Haven; we had some delays because of construction.

Baseball season is upon us, even though the weather is still a bit nippy. Unfortunately, our local teams aren't doing too well. However, Gail Grabowski provides a fun and easy puzzle today called "Play Ball." Here are the theme answers:

20A: Movie theater's tiered layout (STADIUM SEATING). Although the modern multiplex lacks the charm of the old movies palaces, I have to say that stadium seating is so comfortable. The drink holders are convenient, too. Now if they only made trays for popcorn and candy, the seats would be perfect!

37A: Expensive jewelry on a string (DIAMOND NECKLACE). This is something I would be scared to wear, especially on the subway. They are lovely to look at, anyway.

49A: Rough guess (BALLPARK FIGURE). It looks like attendance at ball games was down in 2013. Between parking, tickets, and food, a ballgame is so expensive. The average price for a ticket is almost $30 these days. I remember when the bleacher seats were 50 cents!

Alphabet soup:

43A: City roads that may cross aves. (STS)
33D: Hand-held organizers: Abbr. (PDAS)
55D: Letters after Q (RSTU)
57D: Chicago clock setting: Abbr. (CST)

Today's cryptoquote is by the man behind Mickey Mouse, Walt Disney (1901-1966). Disney was literally behind Mickey--he did his voiceover for many years.

The more you like yourself, the less you are like anyone else, which make you unique.

The Disney empire is bigger than ever today between movies, theme parks, the acquisition of Marvel Comics and "Star Wars," and TV stations (ABC, ESPN, Disney Family etc.). Wikipedia provides a detailed timeline of the company's business events over the years, beginning with 1923. Not bad for someone who started an animation studio out of his garage. It's a shame he didn't live to see the completion of Disney World. He had drawn up the plans for the park right before his death, and construction started shortly afterward.

Truthfully, I was never a huge fan of the Disney cartoons. I always preferred the Warner Brothers stable of stars (Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Elmer Fudd, etc.). I always thought the WB cartoons were more sophisticated. The "Peanuts" cartoons also ranks on my list of all-time favorites, which is why I posted a picture of the gang walking home for a ball game (which they probably lost, again).

In today's JUMBLE, a teenager slacker is watching TV and eating cereal. His mother reminded him that it was Monday. The caption reads "The student forgot to go to school because he was _______.

Word list:

FINSF = SNIFF
NATGE = AGENT
DEVIDI = DIVIDE
TMOOBT = BOTTOM

Scrambled Solution: SNIAENDDBTM
Solution: ABSENT-MINDED

On that note, it's time to return to the daily Monday a.m. routine.

Till tomorrow. . . .

Signing off,
The Puzzlechick
