There is Safety in Numbers

Today's Newsday puzzle is called "Buy the Numbers" and the constructor is Sally R. Stein (which I believe is one of Stan Newman's pseudonyms). Here's a recap of the theme answers:

20A: Couple's Real Estate Buy: ONE-FAMILY HOUSE. The ultimate American dream is to own your home. This was especially true post World-War II, when millions fled the cities. Levittown was the one of the first pre-planned communities; the Levitts built these hamlets in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Puerto Rico. Levittown quickly became a symbol of postwar suburbia but life there seemed to homogeneous, bland, and racially exclusive (Whites only). Below is a picture of Levittown homes from 1957:

37A: Fiance-to-be's buy: TWO-CARAT DIAMOND. It's been 23 years since I got engaged, so I had to research current prices for a diamond ring. I saw prices ranging from $2,000 to $20,000. It depends on the 5 Cs (Color, Weight, Cut, Clarity, and Certification). I figured that a diamond set in 14K white gold or platinum is the most expensive. If you live in or near a large city, always go to its diamond district. Never buy in a cookie-cutter jewelry store like Kay or Zales.

48A: Diner patron's breakfast buy: THREE-MINUTE EGG. This You Tube video shows you how:

Today's Cryptoquote is by Aristotle: "It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it." When you are exposed to a new thought or concept, you should research it for its merits and weaknesses and get the facts before forming an opinion. Only you can accept and reject ideas and shouldn't care what your friends and peers think.

Let's Go Shopping: For the crossword lover, I can't think of a better gift than something from the New York Times. The Times sells everything from puzzle books to crossword-themed cufflinks and dishes. I think the black-and-white color scheme and symmetry are what attracted me to crosswords in the first place. I love how everything fits together in the end.

Till tomorrow.

Signing off,
The Puzzlechick
